CAT 5 vs. CAT 6: What’s the Difference?

Ethernet cables are popular products. They can be used at home for connecting your PC to a router or in a company’s server room.

We believe it’s important to inform our clients and readers about our products. One common question we get is “What is the difference between CAT 5 and CAT 6 ethernet cable?” Here are some things you should know.

CAT 5

CAT 5 cable consists of four pairs of wire that are twisted together to reduce crosstalk, which is when electronic equipment or other cables nearby cause interference due to their emittance of electromagnetic signals. This specification can typically handle 10/100 Mb/s at a 100 MHz bandwidth. The CAT 5e is the enhanced version of this cable and can facilitate speeds up to 10 times faster. Another main difference between the CAT 5 and the enhanced version is that the CAT 5e is subject to more stringent testing in relation to crosstalk.

CAT 6

CAT 6 is a relatively newer and more improved ethernet cable in comparison to the CAT 5. It is more expensive than the CAT 5, but its specifications are improved. This cable is constructed with thick plastic casing, an upgrade to limit crosstalk. It also enables higher speeds by having more twists in each pair of cable and a separator spine running through their center. CAT cables can handle up to 10 GB/s at 55 meters and have a frequency of 550 MHz, another upgrade over the CAT 5. It is also future proof for quicker networking capabilities.

CAT 6 is the better option but is more expensive. Depending on your needs, CAT 5 could get the job done and save you money. Either way, we will accommodate your wire and cable needs with exceptional service and prompt deliveries.
